David Deutsch (Künstler)

From Gyaanipedia

David Deutsch (born August 8, 1943 in Los Angeles, California USA; lives in New York City) is an American contemporary painter, kinetic and conceptual artist. David Deutsch studied at the University of California in Los Angeles until 1966 and at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California from 1966 to 1968.

He had his first solo exhibition in 1972 at the Michael Walls Gallery in Los Angeles.

David Deutsch grew up in Los Angeles and moved to New York soon after completing his education. In the 1960s and 1970s he was concerned not only with painting but also with the optical effects of moving painted objects.

In 1972, he was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Idea + Idea/Light section with the kinetic object "Spinning Painting With Prop," made of fiberboard panels painted with acrylic paint that rotated when powered by an electric motor.

In his painting he developed a lifelong deep interest in the depiction of the star and planetary systems. He created his own conceptual painting that depicted landscapes and large arrangements of small portraits with a telescopic view.

David Deutsch's art shows a fascination with virtual nothingness, which seems large and endlessly deep, yet is perceived. He also works with series of processed photographs, for example aerial images that he calls "Surveillance" ("Überwachung").
